Did you know that skins with different tones age differently?!
First, let’s define skin aging
In a nutshell, skin aging could introduce any of the following conditions:
- Wrinkles
- Sunspots and dark spots
- Uneven skin color
- Sagging and loss of elasticity
- Loss of volume
Why does this happen?
There are two factors influencing skin aging:
- Intrinsic factors: this is due to structural and physiological changes that occur over time related to the genetic background of the individual. Simply some of us are more immune to these factors!
- Extrinsic factors: this is due to environmental exposure like sun exposure, individual lifestyle, diet, exercise, tobacco use, etc.
What makes some of us age faster than others?
- People of Asian and Hispanic descent as well as African Americans have a higher concentration of epidermal melanin. The increase of melanin can provide protection against effects of UV radiation that is the main cause of photo-damage. However, even though they are more protected against hyperpigmentation, they may be more prone to hypopigmentation.
- Asian and African Americans have thicker and more compact dermis than white skin. This contributes to lower incidences of wrinkles.
- Asian and African Americans also have greater lipid content in comparison to white skin giving them a lower chance of losing volume and sagging.
