Geranium Flowers Aren’t Just For Your Garden

The geranium flower is a beautiful addition to any garden. Its bright red or pink color adds a pop of freshness among a bed of green, and it’s easy to see why the flower itself is a popular choice. At Essentique, not only the physical beauty of the flower is important, but also the properties of its essential oil, which is notable for its therapeutic properties and uplifting aroma. When first introduced to essential oils, I was attracted to geranium’s light, floral scent, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it also has a positive influence on my mood! I knew I wanted to find out more about it.

Geranium can be grown in just about any climate, but Essentique’s geranium essential oil comes from Egyptian blossoms. Its fresh, feminine scent resembles that of rose, and like rose, it has many distinct therapeutic properties along with a lovely flowery fragrance.

Aside from its therapeutic uses, Geranium’s medicinal properties make it a great addition to topical creams for oily skin or treating acne. When applied directly to the skin, it has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and has been used since ancient Egyptian times as a method of treating tumors. Its astringency, combined with anti-inflammatory properties, makes it an excellent treatment for various skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and dermatitis. Geranium is also known for its effects in hormone balancing since it influences hormone secretions and can help alleviate pain and discomfort stemming from imbalances. This is especially useful in treating PMS, and when paired with sage it can very effectively help soothe cramping by regulating hormone balance.

But if you are more drawn to geranium’s beautiful scent, perhaps you would be interested to hear about its peaceful influence. The fragrance works much like the oil, in balancing emotions and easing nervous tensions. This makes it a very calming scent, especially since it helps release negative memories and increases well-being. If you are looking for a calming, peaceful influence to diffuse, geranium is a great way to go!

It can also be applied directly in small amounts to the skin (after a patch test on an insensitive part of the body), or inhaled directly or through a diffuser. It blends beautifully with other floral scents, like lavender, chamomile, ylang-ylang, and ginger, among many others. Feel free to experiment with blends, or try Essentique’s own blends Skywalk, Take, Steady Heart, or Délicat which all include geranium or rose geranium. If you are on the hunt for even more geranium, our firming facial cream Elevate is also made with rose geranium hydrosol and luxurious geranium sur fleur rose essential oil; an artisanal co-distillation of damascus rose and geranium. Seek out geranium at Essentique and enjoy!
