The skincare industry always seems to have some hip new ingredient that is advertised to fix all of your skincare problems. From bee venom, to snail extract, to turmeric, the strange ingredients never end. One trendy ingredient has made its way to the spotlight – the White Jelly Mushroom. It goes by many names; such as Snow Mushroom, Tremella, and the Silver Ear Mushroom. It was originally used in ancient Asian medicine and skin care. Princess Yang Guifei of the Tang Dynasty, known as one of the four great beauties of ancient China, credited the White Jelly Mushroom with her youthful skin and natural beauty.

White Jelly Mushroom is such a great natural hydrater because it works similarly to hyaluronic acid. As a humectant, when this ingredient is applied on the skin, it grabs on to water molecules in the air, allowing the skin to pull moisture from its surrounding to hydrate. White Jelly Mushroom can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, meaning that it packs a lot of moisture! Not only that, but White Jelly Mushroom has smaller particles than hyaluronic acid, so it is able to penetrate the skin easily.

White Jelly Mushroom is not only an incredible moisturizer, it also contains other beneficial properties. It contains a high amount of kojic acid, so it helps to lighten skin, even out sun spots, and give the skin a healthy glow.

This mushroom also is incredibly high in vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to reinforce the skin; without it, your skin becomes thinner and more fragile and as a result it begins to sag, showing signs of age. Thus, having an ingredient so high in vitamin D allows it to work as a great anti-aging ingredient.

I had the privilege of seeing this ingredient’s effects on my own skin. I did a face mask of Vipaka mixed with White Jelly Mushroom extract. The effects were incredible. My face was smooth and incredibly glowy. The hydrating effects of the White Jelly Mushroom left my face supple and bouncy, with vibrant skin that glowed all afternoon!

All in all, while this may be a skin care trend, it legitimately does work. You’ll be seeing more of the White Jelly Mushroom in Essentique’s products!
